On Wednesday, there was an apartment fire in Klagenfurt in which a man died and numerous people suffered smoke inhalation. Officials of the fire group of the Provincial Criminal Police Office of Carinthia carried out since then with a court-certified fire expert a fire cause investigation.
According to initial findings, the fire was most likely caused by an electrical defect. As a possible second cause, officials could not completely rule out that an afterglowing cigarette residue started the fire. There were no indications of other causes of the fire, in particular external fault, at the time of the investigations carried out.
The fire caused severe damage to some parts of the apartment building. The apartments in the building are currently uninhabitable. The amount of damage is considerable – but has not been precisely determined. Further investigations are being conducted by the Carinthian State Criminal Police Office.
