Kasper group winner – Villacher SV loses and CHL promotion is gone

VSV had won only one in four previous CHL games in Pool F and should have won both outstanding games against Straubing within 60 minutes.

Villacher SV then provided the first goal of the duel with the Tigers: Robert Sabolic scored on the power play after a feed from Simon Despres and a rich shot in the 13th minute to make it 1-0. Due to one man too many on the ice, the Straubingers had received a penalty earlier. The lead held until the 34th minute when Taylor Leier equalized for the visitors.

In the 45th minute, JC Lipon gave the visitors a 2-1 lead. Although the Villach team then went one better, the turnaround was no longer possible. When they took out the goalie in the finish, Leier scored again 18 seconds before the end into the empty net for 3:1 for the Bavarians. The last group game of VSV at Straubing has no more meaning for the Carinthians.

Two Austrians were also in action in other group games: defending champions Rögle BK with Marco Kasper in Group D and Lulea HF in Group A with a goal by Konstantin Komarek (to make it 1-0 in Aalborg) both managed their fifth wins and are already pool winners before the final group games. Rögle defeated Zurich 3:2 in overtime, Lulea beat Aalborg Pirates 3:1. By the way, the second Group A match between Jukurit and Sparta Prague was scored 3:0 for Jukurit on the green table. The reason was that the match could not be rescheduled within 24 hours. Prague had missed the match scheduled for Tuesday due to a technical defect in the chartered plane to Finland.
